Insurance & Direct Billing Information

paperwork-on-tableAt Dalhousie Family Chiropractic & Massage, we understand that navigating insurance coverage can feel overwhelming. That’s why we’re here to make the process as smooth and stress-free as possible for you and your family. Many of our patients have private health insurance that covers chiropractic care, and we’re committed to helping you maximize your benefits while focusing on what matters most—your health and wellness.

Making Your Care Accessible and Affordable

We believe that quality chiropractic care should be accessible to everyone in our community. While we cannot guarantee direct billing to all insurance companies, we always strive to accommodate our patients to the best of our ability. Our friendly team will work with you to understand your coverage and find the most convenient payment solution for your family’s needs.

Understanding Your Coverage Options

Insurance plans can vary significantly, but here are the most common coverage types we see:

Full Coverage of Treatment : Your insurance covers the entire cost of your chiropractic care—no out-of-pocket expenses for you.
Full Coverage Minus Deductible : Insurance covers your treatment cost after your annual deductible has been met.
Coverage Per Session : Your plan covers a specific dollar amount per visit, regardless of treatment length or total cost.
Percentage Coverage : Insurance covers a predetermined percentage of your treatment cost, with you responsible for the remainder.

Referral Requirements Made Simple

Some insurance plans require a referral from your family doctor or nurse practitioner before covering chiropractic treatment. Don’t worry—we’ll guide you through this process:

  • If your plan requires a referral, you’ll simply pay for your first session out of pocket
  • You can then submit both the referral and invoice directly to your insurance for reimbursement
  • For follow-up treatments, direct billing should be possible, making future visits seamless
  • Some plans may allow us to submit the referral with your first visit, though this varies by provider
  • We recommend checking with your insurance company beforehand to clarify their specific requirements.

When Coverage Isn’t Complete

If your insurance doesn’t cover the full cost of your session, you’ll be responsible for the remaining balance. In some cases, we may be able to direct bill a secondary insurance company if you have dual coverage, depending on whether your primary and secondary plans allow coordination of benefits.

Your First Visit: What to Expect

For your initial appointment, please complete the insurance information section on our intake form. Feel free to bring your benefit details with you—our team is here to help you understand your coverage.

After your first visit, we’ll add detailed notes to your file regarding your insurance provider and typical coverage amounts, making future appointments even more convenient for you.

Important Reminders:

  • Please inform us of any insurance changes due to employment or relationship changes
  • Insurance companies don’t share remaining benefit balances with clinics—contact your insurer directly or check their app for this information
  • Insurance policies reset at different times throughout the year (not always January 1st), so please keep track of when your plan renews

Direct Billing Partners

We’re proud to work with a wide range of insurance providers to offer direct billing services. Our common partners include:
Major Insurance Companies:

  • Alberta Blue Cross
  • Canada Life (formerly Great-West Life)
  • Desjardins Insurance
  • Greenshield
  • Industrial Alliance
  • Manulife
  • Medavie Blue Cross
  • Sunlife

Additional Partners:

  • BPA – Benefit Plan Administrators
  • Canadian Construction Workers Union
  • Chamber of Commerce Group Insurance
  • ClaimSecure
  • Empire Life
  • First Canadian
  • Group Health
  • People Corporation
  • SSQ Insurance
  • TELUS AdjudiCare
  • Union Benefits
  • And many more specialized providers

Please note: Some insurance plans don’t support electronic submissions. If you’re unsure whether your plan supports direct billing, please contact your insurance company directly.

Coordination of Benefits for Families

Spouse/Partner Insurance: The person receiving treatment should always use their primary insurance first. If there’s a remaining balance, it may be submitted to secondary insurance. Even if your spouse’s insurance offers better coverage, your own insurance must be used as primary.

Youth/Students Under Parent’s Insurance: Claims are typically processed through the insurance policy the family has held longest, with remaining balances potentially covered by secondary insurance.

Health Spending Accounts & Invoices

Some insurance plans include Health Spending Accounts that extend beyond traditional paramedical coverage. If you have such an account, you’ll pay for treatments upfront and submit receipts for reimbursement.

Need a copy of an invoice from a previous visit? Simply contact our office, and we’ll provide one promptly.

Electronic Claims & Billing

Sometimes claims may show as “pending” immediately after submission. If this occurs, we’ll void the claim and you’ll pay upfront, then submit the invoice directly to your insurance for reimbursement. This is most common with first-time visits, but subsequent claims typically process smoothly.
